New Artesanal Andean Bear Ruana made 100% by hand now available. The Andean bear lives high up in the mountains in the life-giving paramos, and spread seeds to maintain the health of those ecosystems. Andean Bears are considered sacred beings by many people in Colombia, and are part of many spiritual beliefs. These Ruanas are made from 100% wool that has been hand-spun from sheep, and woven through artesanal methods. Making a Ruana with these traditional methods takes up to one month, but will last with proper care for generations. I still carry my grandfather’s ruana, that has a purported hundred year history.
About ruanas: These are garments that originate from ancestral garments first made from cotton, but with the arrival of sheep in Colombia began to incorporate wool. The iconic ruana is used to shelter oneself from the cold and wind, while not overheating the wearer.
